Typing Text

This section describes how to type in Indian languages using IndiWord. The information provided here pertains to the editor page. Now is a good time to open the editor page in a new window.

The first thing you should do before typing any text is to select a keymap. On the top right corner of the window containing the editor page, you should see a mode toolbar with two pop-down menus. The mode toolbar looks like

In the first pop-down menu, select 'Phonetic'. In the second pop-down menu select the language you want to type in.

Take a look at the 'Key Map' table on the right side of the editor. This table shows mapping from the alphabets of your chosen language to the keys on your qwerty keyboard. In the beginning you will find this table very useful to refer back to.

Select a language in which the examples should be shown.

Now let us start typing.

Typing a vowel
To type the vowel we use the key I as indicated by the keymap table.
Typing a consonant
To type the consonant without the inherent vowel we use the key r. This produces with a virama as in र्. We can then add whichever vowel we want to the vowel-less consonant. Hence to type रि we first use the key r to produce र् and then add the vowel with the key i.
Typing a conjunct
To type the conjunct श्व we first type in the individual consonants in the conjunct, namely type the consonant with the key S and then type the consonant with the key v and finally add the vowel with the key a.

So we have now successfully typed in the word ईश्वरि with keys Ishvari. Pretty intuitive isn't it. For most purposes, this is all you need to know to type in your language. You may wish to stop here. As a side note, realize that what we are writing is composed from the individual utterances we make when we say a word, hence the name Phonetic.

Prevent Consonants from Forming a Conjunct
When typing words borrowed from other languages, often one finds in a position to prevent consonants from forming a conjunct. Lets take for example 'website'. This would be typed normally as vebsait producing वेब्सैट्. To prevent consonants and from forming a conjunct one should type ^ in between the consonants. That is veb^sait will produce वॆब्‌सैट्
